Imagine facing the heart-wrenching reality of losing everything you’ve built over a lifetime. For 68-year-old Daisy, this became a harsh reality when an unexpected divorce left her homeless in California. With no family to turn to, she relied on her decent wages to stay in motels until the money ran out. In search of stability, Daisy moved to Phoenix and became a caregiver for a friend. For ten years, this partnership provided her with a home. But at the end of 2023, her friend passed away, leaving Daisy once again without a home, and this time, without a job.
In her darkest hour, Daisy found hope at SJW’s Mesa office. For three weeks, she visited daily, receiving guidance from our dedicated staff. With help navigating job searches, using our computers, and transportation vouchers, Daisy secured a job paying $19.50 per hour. Soon after, she moved into SJW’s Workforce Village housing. Through sheer determination, working six days a week and as much overtime as possible, Daisy has saved nearly $10,000.
Today, Daisy stands on the brink of a new chapter. Scheduled to move into her own place in mid-August, she has regained her financial footing and found a new love, renewing her hope and joy for the future. Her journey is a testament to resilience and the power of support, echoing her wise words: “Don’t lose hope, stay positive, and do whatever you have to do to get a job and keep a job.”
Daisy’s story is just one among many. Every day, SJW helps individuals like Daisy transition from despair to independence through our employment program and 90-day transitional housing. But we cannot do it alone. We rely on the generosity of donors like you to continue this vital work.
